thecentre:mk and Littlehampton

Posted by KaySquirrel on 23rd July 2006

Yesterday we went to thecentre:mk, in Milton Keynes, and had some yummy subs from Quiznos for lunch! :) We stopped in at Let’s Eat to see what kind of North American foodstuffs they stocked. Uh, £5.75 for a box of Lucky Charms?! No thanks. Missing food from back home is one thing, being so stupid as to pay those kinds of prices is entirely another!

We were still in the shopping centre when a lovely rainstorm hit, and we got a very generous shower as we ran to the bank machine! Other people were trying frantically to avoid the rain. Why spend the past 2 weeks whin(g)ing and moaning about the unbearable heat wave, and then act hysterical when it finally rains, because you might die if water touches you? *rolls eyes*

Today, we headed down to Littlehampton. Despite the gorgeous weather, the seaside wasn’t overly crowded at all. What’s different here than back home is how people here will go to the beach, and then take every conceivable precaution so as not to be touched by any of the elements they (presumably) went to the seaside to experience. It seems that you require a parasol, windscreen, and a camping tent or 2 in order to fully appreciate everything the beach has to offer.

I can understand not wanting to be out in the direct sun. In fact, I have been sporting a lovely sunburn below my throat and along the back of my neck because my hair was pulled into a ponytail (which I rarely do) and I forgot to apply sunscreen to the areas usually shaded by having left my hair down.

I can even understand preferring a deck chair to a towel placed on the ground, given that the beaches here tend to me more pebbly than sandy, and no one wants rocks up the ass! But whyfor the camping tents?! I guess they protect you from the sun as well as the wind, but.. it’s still weird.

I always thought that the irrational fear of a draught was a uniquely German trait. (Growing up, I think I was warned more about draughts than all the other dangers in this world combined! Seriously.) However, it seems that the British are well aware of the MORTAL DANGERS CARRIED BY A BREEZE, too! ;) The rainbow-stiped wind shields were cute, but I really gotta question their necessity.

Altogether a lovely weekend, indeed!

Beef & Broccoli Banned by the European Union

Posted by KaySquirrel on 9th July 2006

Or so it seems!

We have been to no less than 7 Chinese food restaurants in the area, and NONE of them offer a beef and broccoli dish. As a last ditch resort, the last time we went for Chinese I ordered a ‘beef & mixed vegetables’ dish. Sadly, it contained no broccoli. :(

Why, England.. WHY?!?! I can accept the fact that your current levels of culinary technology do not allow for the implementation of plain white Instant Rice into the average English diet. I can even get over the fact that you insist on putting corn in everything. Calling it ’sweetcorn’, however, doesn’t make me any more likely to think it belongs in a tuna sandwich, pasta salad, or on a pizza. (Really now!) But to not have discovered the wonders of Chinese beef & broccoli?! Such a shame..

(I could probably find a recipe and cook it myself, but then I wouldn’t have anything to complain write about today.) ;)

Another Weekend Update

Posted by KaySquirrel on 2nd July 2006

It’s like that updatey thing about the weekend..
Went to Andover yesterday for a stroll & lunch at Jenny’s Restaurant. We got home just in time to watch England lose to Portugal. It’s a shame, really, since the shops have been nice and quiet during an England game! ;)

Today was a picnic lunch at the Watchmoor Nature Reserve, then off to Brickfields County Park in Aldershot for “Fur & Feathers” Wildlife Fun Day!

What’s better than a picture of a pony?

A PICTURE OF A PONY AND A BABY PONY!!!!! :D
